Samarkand in 2 days: a calm, complete itinerary
By Learmara Team
In brief
Two well-paced days that cover the Registan, Shah-i-Zinda, Bibi-Khanym and the old city without rushing.
Day 1 morning: Registan before the crowds
Arrive at the Registan as soon as it opens. The morning light falls softly on the three madrasas — Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor and Tilya-Kori — and the courtyards are quiet. Allow two hours: the gilded interior of the Tilya-Kori mosque deserves time.
Day 1 afternoon: Bibi-Khanym and Siab Bazaar
Walk along Tashkent Street to the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, once one of the largest mosques in the Islamic world. Next door, Siab Bazaar is the place for dried fruit, nuts, spices and the round Samarkand bread. Go early afternoon, when stallholders have time to let you taste.
Day 1 evening: the Registan lit up
Return to the Registan after dark, when the facades are illuminated. It is a short walk from the Guest House and one of the most memorable sights in Central Asia.
Day 2 morning: Shah-i-Zinda
Start at the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, an avenue of blue-tiled mausoleums climbing the hillside. Come early: the tilework is at its best in low light and the steps are cooler.
Day 2 afternoon: Ulugh Beg Observatory and Afrosiyob
Take a short taxi to the Ulugh Beg Observatory, then the Afrosiyob museum and the ancient city mound. A driver for half a day makes this easy — ask us and we will arrange one.
Day 2 evening: Gur-e-Amir
Finish at Gur-e-Amir, the mausoleum of Amir Timur. Its ribbed dome glows at sunset and the interior is quieter in the evening.
