The best time to visit Samarkand

By Learmara Team

In brief

Season by season: weather, crowds, festivals and what to pack for Samarkand.

01

Spring (March to May)

Spring is the favourite season for many travellers. Gardens bloom, temperatures are pleasant and the light is soft. Navruz, the spring new year on 21 March, brings celebrations across the country. It is also busy — book accommodation and trains early.

02

Summer (June to August)

Days are hot, often above 35°C. Sightseeing works best early in the morning and in the evening, with a long rest in the middle of the day. Prices are often more relaxed and the evenings are lively.

03

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn rivals spring: warm days, cool evenings and markets full of grapes, melons and pomegranates. September and October are among the busiest months of the year.

04

Winter (December to February)

Winters are cold and can bring snow, which makes the blue domes look magical. The monuments are quiet, and it is the best time for travellers who prefer calm sightseeing.

05

What to pack

  • Light, breathable clothes for summer and a scarf to cover shoulders in mosques.
  • A warm jacket for winter and for spring and autumn evenings.
  • Comfortable walking shoes for the old city's paving stones.
  • Sunscreen and a hat from April to October.
